How does war lack essential rational purpose? This is a complex, and disturbing book (trigger warning for rape and incest), the kind of book you never forget, and that you’ll never be sorry for reading even though it clocks in at halfway between five and six hundred pages. The piece opens with a girl named Otowa delivering a set of handouts to her classmate Sengoku-san, who seems to have become a hikikomori some time ago. When the action of the novel begins, it has been many years since Sethe killed her other baby daughter rather than let her be taken back to slavery in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act.

With their blend of mysterious narratives and flawlessly precise execution, the oils by Miguel Padura at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, are best described stylistically as "magic realism." An odd example is David Weber's In Fury Born, which starts off as a typical Weber military space opera, until the Greek Fury Tisiphone shows up. (This is exacerbated by the fact that In Fury Born is an expansion of the earlier Path of the Fury, in which Tisiphone shows up about twenty pages in; In Fury Born introduces her around the halfway point.) Elizabeth Goudge's children's novel Linnets and Valerians rides a boundary very carefully.
