Conclusion: This is a very good anthology. It definitely isn’t a collection of the best stories, but it may be the best collection of stories available. While I don't expect the words "magical realism" to revert to their specialized use, I hope that writers won't lose sight of the special literature those words once pointed to exclusively. Hyperbole, or overstatement, is a figure of speech, or trope, that makes events or situations highly unlikely or improbable due to its gross exaggeration.

Perhaps the best known is Rushdie, whose "language form of magical realism straddles both the surrealist tradition of magic realism as it developed in Europe and the mythic tradition of magical realism as it developed in Latin America." I'm unfamiliar with any magical realism out of Africa and Australia, but I'm sure it exists. Pocahontas places a talking willow tree in an otherwise realistic 17th century Virginia setting.

For many magic realist writers, existence is a concept that does not have a one-to-one correspondence with observed reality. Wendy Faris spells out five primary characteristics of magical realism, and Amorfiaana fulfills all of them: an "irreducible" element of magic (168), detailed descriptions of a realistic world, contradictory understandings of events, the near merging of two worlds or realms, and a questioning of received ideas of time, space, and identity (167–74).

With early Gothic enclosures the characters felt trapped and realized that they occupied a very precarious position in relation to both the villain and the outside world. While there are those who argue that this is “merely” a genre, the incorporation of themes, structure, and leitmotifs in these stories has made them rich to study. Walton’s ability as a storyteller is strong. The act of slicing potatoes symbolizes women's work through the ages, and the woman's body as potato is a metaphor for the labor of her forebears, the communal contribution of cooking, the pleasure of food, and the yoke of servitude all in one.
