It was part of the North End Teen Collaborative, a four-agency organization which worked to strengthen youth programs in the North End. Whatever the case, The African dream is a neat, economical (at $14.95) introduction to the life and work of John Muafangejo, who was an engaging, guileless artist with a deep current of Christianity and humanity running through his work. Born and raised in Canada, he now lives in Brooklyn. A number of other pieces were also moved from Series I. The lithographs date from 1830 to 1872 and reflect mid-19th century Parisian society. By the 1960s, he had moved to Addis Ababa and was painting for the market, though still creating mainly religious and biblical themes.

Christine Burgin and New Directions have been co-publishing books that explore the relationship of text and image for the last six years. The models, who are often her friends, become abstracted compositional elements, strangely beautiful studies in shape and interaction. In a back and forth via email, James commented further on the child model’s identity in my 3 photographs after I speculated a bit further and asked if he might be the same model depicted in “The Wondrous Globe”, a photograph appearing in Camera Work 38, published in 1912: I don’t believe there are other images in the three issues of Camera Work in which AB has work that feature this model, but he is used in other images that I have never seen printed.

Andrea started working in Iraq in 2003, following the intricacies and obstacles of the conflict experienced by Iraqis and the US military.
